PHOTO 2733
Caption: Top pic is one of the self propelled gun that came in shortly after we got there.I think there was three of them. I was told they were 175MM. Shortly after they got there one of the guns wasn't ready and the crew jumped on it and started to get it ready to fire a mission. A couple of mintues later we got incoming mortar rounds from the bush and two rounds bracketed the gun and one landed square on the gun. Other picture shows the top of the hill at Bastogne with one tree left standing, big mistake. Every day we would get mortared with just a few rounds but very accurate. They finally figured out the NVA had paced off the positions from that tree. We blew the tree down and from then on mortars weren't very accurate.
