PHOTO 0041
Caption: Rich Hoffman on a break. The bridge was constructed using creosoted pilings, iron framing and thick wood planks, also soaked in creosote. In the heat, and humidity, sweat constantly was in your eyes, irritating any scratch, or wound you may have had. The engineers and other "D" Company personnel who built the Song Ba Ren Bridge created the longest bridge span in Marine Corps History, over 722 feet. We did it while under the most extream weather conditions, and frequently while being sniped at, or mortored by VC. The sweeps conducted by these same Marines every morning found mines of every type planted in the road. Found mines were blown in place, but more often, we found a crater. The sweeps and subsequent road repairs had to be completed before work on the bridge could be started that day. The ARVN did not provide any semblence of security and we frequently were left to our own defenses. The following pictures were taken by Rich Hoffman, or are copies obtained from the Defense Department.
